Create Knowledge Base Categories

Categories are the shelves of your knowledge base. Before you write your first article, set up a few categories so your content stays organized and customers can browse by topic instead of hunting through a long list.

Add a new category

Every category needs a name and a URL-friendly slug. You can also nest categories under a parent to build a tidy hierarchy.

  • Open your knowledge base settings and choose New Category.
  • Enter a Name (for example, "Billing" or "Getting Started").
  • Set a Slug — the short, lowercase text used in the category's web address (for example, billing). Each slug must be unique.
  • Optionally add a Description to explain what the category covers, and pick an Icon to help it stand out.
  • Leave the category Published to show it in your public help center, or turn this off to keep it hidden while you build it out.
  • Save your changes.
  • Organize and order categories

You control how categories appear to your readers.

  • Use the Display order field to control where each category sits — lower numbers appear first.
  • To create a subcategory, set a Parent category so the new category nests beneath it.
  • Publish or unpublish any category at any time. Unpublished categories stay out of the public help center but remain visible to your team.
  • Edit or remove a category

Categories can be updated as your content grows.

  • Select a category to change its name, slug, description, icon, order, or published status.
  • If you change the slug, make sure the new one isn't already in use — TixTalk will flag duplicates.
  • To delete a category, first move or remove any articles inside it. Categories that still contain articles or subcategories can't be deleted, which protects you from accidentally losing content.
  • Once your categories are in place, you're ready to start writing articles and filling out your help center.
